The Medicaid Analytic eXtract (MAX) data are a set of person-level data files derived from MSIS data on Medicaid eligibility, service utilization and payments. We will mine the available MAX files to identify individual patients with sickle cell disease who can be followed using the claims data for at least two calendar years. We will determine clinically significant  events to determine disease severity. We will similarly identify unique individuals who have undergoing an HCT and have at least two years of claims data prior to the HCT. This will help us identify the numbers and proportion of patients with SCD who undergo HCT. This will help us identify the numbers and proportion of patients with SCD who undergo HCT. Using the  established criteria of disease severity for consideration of HCT we will determine the number and proportion of patients with SCD who meet disease severity criteria that undergo HCT.

We will interrogate the relationship of factors such as demographics, age, race, basis of eligibility for Medicaid, parent employment status and job classification to the performance of HCT. Comparison of proportion of SCD patients who are African-American to the proportion of patients who underwent HCT for SCD who are African-American will determine the role of race in health disparities.
